OUR TEAM

JONATHAN HILES, ESQ.

Jonathan began working on wrongful conviction cases in 2013, as a student at Harvard Law School. He has assisted Tom Hoffman with multiple exonerations and has experience working on all phases of wrongful conviction cases, from reinvestigation to courtroom advocacy to appeals. He has handled successful post-conviction motions as well as civil lawsuits in both state and federal court.

In civil cases, Jonathan has helped firm clients secure seven- and eight-figure settlements based on evidence of their innocence and of constitutional violations.  He also co-authored the appeals briefing in Bellamy v. City of New York, 914 F.3d 727 (2d Cir. 2019), a civil lawsuit that expanded civil liability for prosecutorial misconduct in New York.

Jonathan is also an advocate of systemic reforms to the criminal legal system, speaking at rallies, lobbying legislators, and helping to draft and promote The Challenging Wrongful Conviction Act, a bill to ensure all wrongfully convicted New Yorkers get a chance to prove their innocence.

In addition to partnering with Tom, Jonathan has worked at civil rights law firm Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight and Law Offices of Joel Rudin, a leading criminal defense and civil rights law firm.

Outside of legal practice, Jonathan has served as a staffer and volunteer on several Democratic campaigns, including as a Biden-Harris voter protection director and as a campaign manager for a progressive district attorney candidate. Prior to law school, he worked as a middle school teacher in Jackson, Mississippi.
